Are you using non-toxic cleaners? DIY Bathroom Products Part 2 (VIDEO)

Are you using non-toxic cleaners? DIY Bathroom Products Part 2 (VIDEO)

In this segment, Suncear demonstrates the different ingredients that can be used to clean the different areas of the bathroom and they are chemical free, non toxic, nature friendly and are available in our kitchen.

1. Sink Cleaner - sprinkle baking soda and squeeze lemon juice (good for treating stains) on to it and use a sponge to clean the sink (you don’t even have to use gloves), or (you can make a paste out of baking soda and lemon juice).

2. Faucets cleaner (chrome) – mix 50-50 vinegar and water and wipe it on the faucets followed by polishing with newspaper. Although vinegar can have a peculiar smell, it would go once it dries up. Most important thing to remember: vinegar is an excellent  disinfectant.

3. Glass cleaner - in an empty container with spray nozzle (you can save by recycling empty containers), mix again vinegar and water, add to it lemon juice or a mild soap, spray the glass and polish with newspaper and again you will be surprised with the effect you don’t expect.

4. Bowl cleaner - pour white vinegar around the inside (or even outside) of the toilet bowl  and use brush to spread the vinegar while cleaning at the same time.

Do It Yourself: Homemade Face Toner

Do It Yourself: Homemade Face Toner

I remember purchasing a tea tree oil toner from Lush a while ago and thinking to myself, “Why did I buy this? I could have made it myself.” And furthermore, what is the purpose of this stuff anyway? Toner helps bring the skin’s pH back into balance, tightens pores and helps clear the last bit of soap residue.  I notice a slight difference after using it but whether or not it’s necessary in a skincare routine, is debatable. Cooling Cucumber Toner full article vertical 253x300 Do It Yourself: Homemade Face Toner I was sort of irritated that I spent money on it, especially after realizing that it has parabens in it.  So I dumped the contents and used the bottle to house my own.  Here’s one that works just as well- if not better.  It’s great for me to use this in the summer when I don’t need as much moisturizer.

1/2 cup Witch Hazel

Cucumber juice*
A couple of drops of tea tree oil.

*To get the cucumber juice, peel it, chop it, blend it or smash it to a pulp, place it in some cheese cloth and squeeze the juice out.

It’s best to refrigerate it which will not only keep it fresh but the cold will increase it’s pore tightening abilities.

Do It Yourself Dandruff Treatment by Suncear Scretchen

Do It Yourself Dandruff Treatment by Suncear Scretchen

Seeing flakes but it’s not snowing outside? Whenever I see dandruff in my hair, that usually means I need to wash it.  The cause is too much oil on my scalp.  When most people think of dandruff, they think it’s due to lack of oil.  Both are true- the sebaceous glands can produce too much or too little oil on our skin and hair resulting in acne and dandruff.  Dandruff shampoos have a tendency to be very harsh on the hair as the chemicals are extremely drying and irritating. Here is a remedy that may work to help alleviate that pesky white stuff.

First try exfoliating with some sea salt or baking soda before.  This will loosen the dandruff and make it easier to wash out.

A couple of drops of tea tree oil
1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar
A couple of drops of rosemary oil

Mix and rub the concoction onto your scalp, leave on for 10 minutes or so, then shampoo as usual. I also tried this without the cider vinegar which is good if you would like to leave it on without washing.  This should help diminish the dandruff but for extra help, avoid, wheat, sugar, alcohol and foods that are rich in selenium, zinc and vitamins E. C and B complex.  Incorporating raw nuts, dark leafy greens, fish and dark chocolate or cacao will help give you the much need nutrients to combat the oil imbalance.

After a few applications you should be able to wear black again. icon smile Do It Yourself Dandruff Treatment by Suncear Scretchen

Do It Yourself: Air Freshener

Do It Yourself: Air Freshener

Instead of throwing out old plastic spray bottles, used them for your own concoctions.  Of course you will need to wash them out thoroughly but you can use old window or bathroom cleaner bottles for your own homemade cleaners.
